Clarence succumbed to a heart attack the day after Thanksgiving after returning from eating holiday supper with his family. Prior to that, Clarence had run several calls for service. His death was deemed by the United States Department of Justice and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as a Line-Of-Duty-Death. Clarence was a great friend, Firefighter, and mentor to all who knew him. "See you on the BIG ONE buddy!"
6201 Assistant Chief Robert L. Hipes Sr.
February 4, 1937 - September 24, 2014
Assistant Chief Hipes "Big Bob", started with the Hematite Volunteer Fire Department in March of 1963 and served until his death in 2014, for a total of 51 years of service. He was instrumental in the passing of a property tax which enable the formation of the Hematite Fire Protection District in 1975. "Big Bob" will be remembered as a loving family man, dear friend, and inspiring leader. "Rest in peace Chief, we've got it from here."
